D365 28/365 – Month of dLife supplies

Today is payday, so it was time to refill prescriptions. Here is one month’s supply of prescriptions, insulin, test strips, pump cartridges and pump insertion sets. Thank God I have good health insurance. The original cost of the pills and insulin were $960. Each infusion set costs $13 (I use 10 per month – $130) and each pump cartridge is $3.65 (I use 15 per month – $55). A package of test strips (100 count) is right around $100.

My cost for the prescriptions, test strips and insulin was $154.24 and my pump supplies are covered by insurance (I think I pay 10% – I haven’t had to reorder since getting my pump in June)

Total cost before insurance – $1,170
Cost after insurance – about $175.00
My insurance saved me a little under $1,000 and I pay less than $20 per month for my individual insurance benefit (my employer – the State of Kansas pays for the rest of it).

We don’t work for the joy of our jobs, we work for insurance and other health benefits.

D365 27/365 – dLife and wLife

Balancing my dLife and wLife is sometimes a challenge. This is my first semester of being a college professor and also wearing a pump. Needless to say, I now have supplies at home and at work (since it seems my pump never needs changing cartridges at the same time every 2 days)

Classes start on Monday.

Living to eat vs. Eating to live

Categories: Life with diabetes

Having a disease that affects your entire body each time you put something in your mouth really “bites” – no pun intended. Having a disease that affects your body each time you get stressed out also bites. Being a person who is a stress eater bites even more.

When I get stressed, my blood sugars rise. When I get stressed, I want to eat (usually things that are not healthy for me – chocolate, junk food, etc). Combine the two and there are times when living with diabetes can be a struggle – even a constant BATTLE.

I’m a foodie. I love food. I love to see it, smell it, feel it, hear it cooking, and of course, I LOVE to TASTE it. I’m a person who lives to eat, not eats to live. My favorite channel on TV is #65 on Hays Cable – the Food Network.

As I enter this new period of life with this disease, I keep reminding myself that I shouldn’t feel guilty about a “treat” every once-in-a-while. This is 2008, not 1980, when doctors told diabetics they couldn’t have different things. Now, we should eat sensibly, but not deprive ourselves of things we like. We just need to be smart about our food choices, count carbs and cover the “special” foods with adequate amounts of insulin, so blood sugars are regulated.

Now if I could just remember that I need to eat to live, not live to eat!!!

Today I presented a workshop on using technology in the classroom at my hometown school district. My aunt is the head cook and makes PHENOMENAL cinnamon rolls. I had 1/2 of one at the breakfast before we got started. OUCH. The cinnamon roll combined with me leading a workshop (my blood sugars always are a bit high when I teach) made for a pretty high (250+) before lunch BG.

Life on an insulin pump with better control of my blood sugars has caused on thing I really don’t like – weight gain!!! I’ve gained about 4-5 pounds in the past month. I guess I’ll start watching not only my CARB intake, but my CALORIE intake.

Thank goodness the fall semester starts in a week and I’ll get my butt over to the campus wellness center to lose the 30 pounds I want to lose!
