A new beginning
Well, I’ve done it.
After 23 years of living with diabetes, I’ve decided to get hooked up to an insulin pump. I’ve thought about it casually for several years, but really never took the “big step” to do it. Well, after a nasty scare in December 2007 that just about cost me my life (you can read my little essay on life and death) I’ve decided to make living with diabetes a bit easier (at least I hope so).
I had my appointment with Dr. Cook at Hays Medical Center on Friday, May 30 and ordered the Animas 2020 insulin pump. It should be here in a few days and then we’ll set up an appointment with the pump representative and one of the nurses in Dr. Cook’s office to get me started. I know it won’t be easy in the beginning, but it will be worth it. Getting used to having something hooked up to me 24/7 will be a challenge, but these new pumps are small, lightweight, waterproof and pretty indestructible.
I’ve decided to blog about my experience with a pump so I can have something to look back upon during this first year with an insulin pump and to also educate anyone out there who is interested in learning about living with diabetes.
